IPTV and Internet TV
Internet TV should not be confused with the IPTV paradigm championed by Amino. IPTV enables major telecom providers and large media groups to implement closed, proprietary TV systems delivered via IP-based secure channels. Internet Television is instead an evolving web based framework that can provide video content to the consumer directly via a standard broadband connection. Internet TV is not necessarily direct competition to IPTV and in fact could supplement a Telco’s offering of traditional mainstream channels with a portal to niche or “long tail” content.

The Content Provider and the Consumer
Internet TV content providers operate various business models based on free-to-view content or pay-per-view and subscription services. Most channels generate income from advertising and some from on-line purchase so return path technology is important. Consumers will have access to a huge diversity of content and IPTV providers that enable these services could widen their appeal further.
The Enabling Technologies
Increasing processor power and media storage is turning the humble home PC into a home media server. The availability of faster and faster broadband connections, free unlimited storage space, file sharing applications, Windows Media, MPEG4, Digital Rights Management and powerful low-cost hardware and software production tools have all driven this “video delivered over broadband” phenomenon. However studies indicate that a large proportion of viewers would welcome the chance to watch these services on TV instead of the PC screen.
Demanding Excellence
Consumers have come to expect a level of quality of service when watching TV that is hard to achieve when live streaming video content over the Internet. One solution is to simply pre-download content for later consumption. Media stored on the home PC can be made available on the home network to other devices using either Wireless or Ethernet over Power technologies.
Innovative Solutions
Amino is working to enable its set-top boxes to access PC stored
content and play it on the TV using the very latest home network
technologies. We are constantly evaluating the range of decoders
crucial in the diverse world of Internet based content and work
closely with our partners to deliver full-featured web browser
experience optimised for any size of TV screen. Amino will continue
to innovate based upon delivering features that our customers can
sell and benefits that the consumers will demand.
