International Women’s Day is today, Friday March 8th! The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975 and established March 8th as a day for celebrating women’s rights and world peace in 1977. UN Women believes that innovation and technology provide unprecedented opportunities for women, yet trends indicate a growing gender divide in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and design.
The Cable Telecommunications industry has been focused on this issue for several years. At the recent World Economic Forum, Maria Brennan, CAE, President and CEO of Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) shared survey results revealing that female executives and senior-level managers makes up 38% of the industry’s overall workforce. This is higher than the U.S. national average. In speaking with women just starting out or those building their careers, they yearn for female mentors and role models. At Amino, women are fortunate to see women in various types of leadership roles, from QA managers to HR and Finance leads to a female member of the Board of Directors.
According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 81% of girls discovering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), in elementary school, are interested in pursuing STEM careers. However, they are often discouraged from this pursuit between the ages of 11-15. Rather than maintain the status quo, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Think equal, build smart and innovate for change”.
Here at Amino we can relate to this theme as we celebrate the women in all roles at Amino who, working alongside their male colleagues, develop products and solutions, ensure operational effectiveness, and takes our products to market. Women represent 21% of the overall workforce. Where are the women of Amino? They are represented in every region and every role:
Whether it’s your colleague or your mother, sister or daughter March 8th is a day for celebrating them and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Without barriers. Without limitations. With parity.
